Air Purifiers for Hair Salons

Beauty treatments are a wonderful way to pamper ourselves. But danger may be lurking in the products being used in hair and nail salons. Customers and in particular, salon employees are subject to regular exposure to these toxic chemicals. Research has shown that exposure to hair and nail salon fumes, sprays, dyes, and chemicals can result in chronic respiratory illnesses, asthma attacks, eye irritation, cracked skin, miscarriages, birth defects in pregnant women and even cancer.

According to the U.S. Government’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), nail polishes, nail glues, and other nail and hair salon products may contain a variety of chemicals and list includes but not limited to:

  1. Formaldehyde: This chemical is added to nail polishes as a"nail hardeners." It is also used in hair products. Formaldehyde has been considered a carcinogen, linked to nasal and lung cancers, by the International Agency for Research on Cancer.
  2. Dibutyl Phthalate, or DBP: Added to nail polish to make it more flexible and less prone to cracks, chips, and other annoyances. It has been linked to reproductive issues.
  3. Toluene/Benzene: Used in nail polish remover. It can cause skin, throat and eye irritation, headaches, dizziness, fatigue, anxiety, and in situations of prolonged exposure, birth defects, liver and kidney damage.
  4. Acetone: This chemical is found in nail polish remover and fingernail glue remover.
Inhaling it can cause headaches, dizziness, skin, throat and eye irritation, depression, nausea and vomiting.
  5. Ammonium hydroxide, 2,5-Toluenediamine– This chemical is found in permanent hair colour. It can cause irritation of the skin, eyes, mucous membranes and respiratory system and csn precipitate the development of allergies.
  6. Ethanol, Hydrocarbons – These chemicals are produced by aerosol hairsprays and mousses.
It can result in irritation of the nose and throat, headaches and fatigue.
  7. Sodium Persulphates, Ammonia–Used in bleaches. It can lead to irritation of the skin, nose, throat and respiratory system, nausea, and vomiting.

Why Formaldehyde is considered the most dangerous of all

Of all the chemicals and fumes, OSHA has pinpointed, in particular, the dangers of formaldehyde. It is known to cause the following complications:

  • Eye irritation including blindness.
  • Nose irritation and bloody noses.
  • Skin sensitivity, rashes and itching.
  • Breathing difficulties, such as coughing and wheezing.

Levels of formaldehyde above 0.1 ppm in the air can irritate your nose, throat, and lungs. These symptoms will get worse as formaldehyde levels go up. Airpura F600 DLX has 26 lbs of custom blended activated carbon with powerful oxidizers that removes up to 99% of formaldehyde. Excellent for thousands of other chemicals.
