I don't recommend the SF700DLX filter with the potassium pomegranate because it is too strong and will causing a burning sensation in your nose or even your eyes. Even after gassing it off, I reacted it to and it leaves a sweet smell throughout the air. I have a two floor home with open floor plans and could smell it even after opening the windows and putting box fans throughout. I had high VOCs and some formaldehyde because of a kitchen cabinet installation and told Airpura I was reacting to the chemicals and am chemically sensitive. I told them about the burning sensation and they did nothing. I researched it and figured out to get a filter without the potassium so I ordered it. No offer to correct their mistake. They also recommended two filters which was too much for my square footage and cause ear popping from the pressure created in the house. That was painful to return and when I asked why they recommended two against the specifications, no answer. I just installed the carbon filter for the chemically sensitive so I'll let you know how that goes. BTW other air filter brands that use the potassium to address formaldehyde without properly letting it gas off are getting the same reactions by people (smell and burning) reviews on Amazon.
I have mixed feelings. The website has virtually no description for this filter; instructions for use, purpose (how it differs from normal profilters, who it is best suited for), if it is washable for reuse etc. I also notice my HEPA filter is VERY dirty while this remains clean. I'm not sure if that's a sign that it's doing its job, or not really..
Hi Emily,
Thank you for reaching out and sharing your feedback! We agree that choosing the right filtration is important, and we are happy to provide the exact details you need regarding our TarBarrier filter.
What is the Purpose of the TarBarrier?
The TarBarrier is engineered specifically to capture heavy, sticky, and microscopic airborne contaminants that normal filters miss. While standard filters focus on dry dust and pet dander, the TarBarrier acts as a specialized defensive shield against dense particles, smoke byproducts, oily residue, and fine moisture-bound pollutants.
TarBarrier vs. Normal ProFilters: What is the Difference?
- Material Structure: Standard ProFilters use loose fibers optimized for airflow and large dust particles. The TarBarrier features a high-density, webbed Nonwoven Polyester Batting structure that forces air through millions of tiny, tight pathways to trap complex pollutants.
- Target Contaminants: Normal filters capture everyday dust. The TarBarrier is optimized for heavy-duty environments where smoke, grease, oils, or intense organic particles are present.
- Placement: It is typically used as a pre-filter or secondary enhancement layer to protect your main HVAC system and extend the life of your primary filters.
Who is it Best Suited For?
The TarBarrier is ideal for:
- Homes with indoor smokers or wood-burning stoves.
- High-demand commercial areas, workshops, and printing spaces.
- Kitchens and spaces exposed to airborne cooking oils or heavy vapor.
- Anyone looking for an extra layer of defense against microscopic smoke and odor particles.
Instructions for Use
1. Identify Flow Direction: Place the TarBarrier directly in front of your primary filter (so incoming air hits the TarBarrier first).
2. Secure Fit: Trim the material with standard household scissors if you need a precise, custom fit for your filter slot.
3. Monitor Closely: Because it captures heavy particles efficiently, check the filter monthly in high-smoke or high-residue environments.
Is it Washable and Reusable?
No, the TarBarrier is a disposable filter and is not designed to be washed. Because it is made of dense, synthetic nonwoven fibers designed to capture sticky matter, washing it with water will clog the dense web structure, reduce airflow, and compromise its filtration efficiency. For optimal air quality and safety, we recommend replacing the filter layer once it becomes visibly discolored or loaded with residue.
I have used the R600 for many years in my she shed office. It is 10 x 16 and the purifier helps remove the pine wood smell that can be overwhelming when it gets hot in the board and batten siding shed. Getting ready to order all new parts for that new filter fresh air!
Love how the machine works. It literally eats cigarette smoke odors. Very different from normal air purifiers. Now for my wish list of bells and whistles: 1) The speed indicator (which is literally the only knob other than the one/off switch) could be bigger with a few notches indicating a scale of 1-10 or 1-5 so people can align where to turn the knob. 2) It would be fabulous if there were a sensor with an option to automatically increase/decrease speed based on smoke fume intensity 3) The screws for the bottom to access the filter could be hooks instead. Those screw heads will be worn down after a few air filter changes. 3) The directions for the air filters could easily be more descriptive. For example, should the tar filter blue side be facing in or out when replacing? And are you sure the HEPA filter will last for one year? During my first tar filter replacement (3 months of continuous use for a family with two smokers in a designated room) the HEPA core filter seemed far dirtier than the exterior tar filter. So, kudos on a well-functioning product. Please keep upgrading the easy of use on the next generation. It is brilliant and does work remarkably well. Just not very easy/practical to swap the filters.
