Influenza (also called the flu) is a respiratory illness that, like the common cold, is caused by a virus. Both the cold and the flu affect the respiratory tract and cause symptoms such as congestion, sore throat, sneezing and headaches. The main difference between the cold and the flu is that a person with the flu generally has a high fever for a few days along with moderate to severe body aches. The North American flu season starts in October and lasts until May and affects between 5% to 20% of the general population every year.


  1. The #1 thing you can do to reduce your chance of getting the flu is getting the flu shot. The CDC claims that the flu vaccine reduces the odds of getting the flu by about 60%. In people who live in a nursing home or care facility, the flu vaccine is 50% to 60% effective in preventing hospitalization and 80% effective in preventing death from a flu complication

  2. Hand washing is a simple regimen that is frequently overlooked, but it’s your second most effective weapon to preventing the flu. To rid the virus from your skin, wash your hands vigorously with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. This should be done a few times a day and the first thing you do when you come home.

  3. Keep your environment clean and that also includes your air. Running an air purifier that that contains a germicidal UV lamp will kill all airborne flu viruses.
